Bodo Dokhona from Assam & India

Bodo Dokhona is the traditional handwoven attire of Bodo women of Assam, particularly associated with the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Traditionally woven by skilled Bodo women on handlooms, Dokhona is admired for its vibrant colours, distinctive Agor motifs, geometric patterns and strong cultural identity.

Generally measuring around 3 metres in length and 1.5 metres in width, the Dokhona is wrapped from the chest down to the legs. Traditional and contemporary Dokhonas are produced in cotton as well as silk-based yarns and are increasingly appreciated for ethnic fashion, cultural wear, gifting and premium handloom collections.

Bodo Dokhona has also received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition, strengthening its identity as an authentic traditional handicraft of Assam, India.

1. Traditional Matha / Salamatha Bodo Dokhona

The Matha or Salamatha Dokhona represents the classic plain style of Bodo weaving. Unlike heavily patterned Dokhonas, it has a comparatively simple body with traditional border detailing. Yellow is one of the most important traditional colours, and yellow Matha Dokhona has particular significance as bridal and ceremonial attire.
